Italian visionary who received apparitions of the Virgin Mary at Tre Fontane in Rome on April 12, 1947. Before the apparition, Bruno was a militant communist and anti-Catholic Protestant who was preparing to assassinate Pope Pius XII — he carried a knife engraved 'Morte al Papa' (Death to the Pope). After his conversion through the apparition, he dedicated 54 years of his life to witnessing about the event. He later received the stigmata in 1955. The local Roman diocese has approved the Marian cult at the shrine, though the Vatican has not officially ruled on the apparitions themselves. Bruno delivered 10 sealed documents to Pope Paul VI containing prophecies to be opened on specific dates.
