From Mélanie’s published Secret of La Salette (Lecce, 1879, with imprimatur from Bishop Salvatore Luigi Zola of Lecce — originally from Bishop Petagna of Castellammare di Stabia): "There shall be terrible signs in the air, lightning, fire from heaven, and an unprecedented darkness over all the earth. Nature will demand vengeance for men, and she will tremble and quiver in expectation of what is to come upon a once Christian, but now perverted earth." The Secret echoes the older tradition of the Three Days of Darkness — a supernatural darkness during which the wicked will perish, and only those who remain inside, with blessed candles, will survive.
