Last prophet of the Old Testament whose book addresses the spiritual apathy of post-exilic Israel. He prophesied the coming of Elijah before the great and dreadful Day of the Lord, interpreted by Christians as referring to John the Baptist.

Messenger Before the Messiah (Elijah Returns)

Fulfilled

I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. See, I will send the prophet Elijah to you before that great and dreadful day of the Lord comes. He will turn the hearts of the parents to their children, and the hearts of the children to their parents.

Reality: Jesus identified John the Baptist as the fulfillment of this prophecy — the Elijah figure who prepared the way for the Messiah through his preaching of repentance.
