Russian Orthodox saint, born in Ukraine, who served as bishop of Shanghai (1934-1949) and later San Francisco (1962-1966). Canonized in 1994. Known for his extreme asceticism — he slept in a chair, never in a bed, wore sandals even in winter, and ate only once a day. Famous for numerous miracles, including healing the sick and prophetic visions. He foresaw the fall of communism and the spread of Orthodoxy to the West.
