Swiss hermit, mystic, and patron saint of Switzerland. A married father of ten children, he left his family at age 50 with their consent to live as a hermit, surviving 20 years solely on the Eucharist — verified by civil and Church authorities. He prevented a Swiss civil war through mediation. Canonized in 1947.
