Elijah challenged 450 prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel: "The god who answers by fire — he is God." The prophets of Baal called on their god all day with no response. Then Elijah prayed and the fire of the Lord fell, burning the sacrifice, the wood, the stones, the soil, and even the water in the trench. The people fell prostrate: "The Lord — he is God!" (1 Kings 18:24-39)
