Elijah

Elijah

c. 900 BC – c. 850 BC · Israel bible · Prophet
Bible

Elijah (Ilija) is considered the greatest of the Old Testament prophets. A Tishbite from Gilead, he stood alone against King Ahab, Queen Jezebel, and 450 prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel, calling down fire from heaven. He predicted drought, raised the dead, and was taken to heaven in a chariot of fire without dying. Jewish tradition expects his return before the Messiah. Jesus identified John the Baptist as Elijah's spiritual successor (Matthew 11:14). Elijah appeared alongside Moses at the Transfiguration of Christ.

Elijah challenged 450 prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel: "The god who answers by fire — he is God." The prophets of Baal called on their god all day with no response. Then Elijah prayed and the fire of the Lord fell, burning the sacrifice, the wood, the stones, the soil, and even the water in the trench. The people fell prostrate: "The Lord — he is God!" (1 Kings 18:24-39)

After Ahab and Jezebel murdered Naboth to steal his vineyard, Elijah prophesied: "In the place where dogs licked up Naboth's blood, dogs will lick up your blood." (1 Kings 21:19). The Return of Elijah Before the Great Day
865 BC — Israel
Partial
The prophet Malachi foretold: "See, I will send the prophet Elijah to you before that great and dreadful day of the Lord comes. He will turn the hearts of the parents to their children, and the hearts of the children to their parents." (Malachi 4:5-6). Jesus said this was fulfilled in John the Baptist (Matthew 11:14), but many believe Elijah will return again before the Second Coming, as one of the Two Witnesses of Revelation 11.
