Haggai (Hagaj) was a post-exilic prophet who ministered in Jerusalem around 520 BC, after the Jews returned from Babylonian captivity. His primary mission was to encourage the rebuilding of the Second Temple under Zerubbabel. His book contains four dated messages delivered over a period of about four months. He is one of the twelve Minor Prophets.

Command to Rebuild the Temple

This is what the Lord Almighty says: These people say, "The time has not yet come to rebuild the Lord's house." Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses, while this house remains a ruin? Give careful thought to your ways. You have planted much, but harvested little. Go up into the mountains and bring down timber and build My house. (Haggai 1:2-8)

The Greater Glory of the Second Temple
520 BC — Jerusalem
Fulfilled
The glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house, says the Lord Almighty. And in this place I will grant peace. (Haggai 2:9). Christians interpret this as fulfilled by Jesus Christ, who walked in the Second Temple, making its glory surpass Solomon's Temple — not through physical grandeur but through the presence of the Messiah himself.

Zerubbabel as God's Signet Ring
520 BC — Jerusalem

On that day, declares the Lord Almighty, I will take you, my servant Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, and I will make you like my signet ring, for I have chosen you. (Haggai 2:23). This messianic prophecy points to Zerubbabel as an ancestor of Jesus Christ, restoring the Davidic line that had been "removed" like a signet ring under Jeconiah (Jeremiah 22:24).
