John the Baptist (Ivan Krstitelj) was the forerunner of Jesus Christ, the last and greatest of the Old Testament-style prophets. Son of the priest Zechariah and Elizabeth (relative of Mary), his birth was foretold by the angel Gabriel. He preached repentance and baptism in the Jordan River, drawing massive crowds from all Judea. He baptized Jesus and identified Him as "the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world" (John 1:29). Jesus said of him: "Among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist" (Matthew 11:11). He was beheaded by Herod Antipas.
